Gum Grafting in Edmonton

What Is a Cosmetic Gum Graft?

Callingwood Dental Health Centre and Suites in Edmonton can provide gum grafting as part of our cosmetic dentistry services. Cosmetic gum grafts use connective tissue from the palate or AlloDerm® to graft recession areas of the gums. Dr. Xie is well experienced and knowledgeable in the area of cosmetic gum grafting, having graduated from Michigan University’s Advanced Periodontal and Implant Surgical Program in 2011.

Benefits of Cosmetic Gum Grafts

Gum recession affects 4% to 12% of adults and often goes unnoticed until it becomes more severe. When your gums recede, dentin is exposed which makes it prone to decay and sensitivity. Recession of gingival tissue and bone exposes the cementum surface that then becomes susceptible to abrasion and ditching of the cervical area. Benefits of gum grafting include subsiding sensitivity, treating root exposure, and improving overall appearance.

Gum Grafting Procedure – What to Expect

During a gum graft procedure, a small incision is made on the roof of your mouth or palate and a thin layer of connective tissue is removed. This tissue is then grafted to the area where the gum has receded. Using your own body tissue will help the healing process. AlloDerm®, an alternative to using your own body tissue, can be grafted directly to the recession site. AlloDerm® procedures are less invasive. Depending on the procedure, dressing may or may not be placed on the surgical sutures for protection.
